Ep 42 - Turning the Tide w/ László Molnárfi

On this week's episode of Rocinante, Angela is joined by László Molnárfi. Has the left abandoned its working-class roots by embracing a liberal cultural politics of moralism and identity, thereby making itself irrelevant and pushing people toward right-wing populism? How can a revitalized socialist movement reclaim popular appeal by focusing on material issues like housing and wages, while constructively engaging with questions of nationalism, migration, and sovereignty?

I think László would enjoy reading this, from a caucus of our students.

Hi Seán and Angela! I enjoyed hearing your perspective on these issues. As a leader in DSA, I think it’s worth hearing. I disagree with Lázsló’s thoughts on immigration, but I think he has valuable ideas about left-wing populism, Laclau and Mouffe and the European left. I was involved in TCDSU during the Repeal campaign days - it was a good time for class demands in Irish society that would be good to get back to. I was a big fan of your writing, which was assigned when I was studying for my Political Communications MA at DCU. I wanted to thank Angela Nagle for sharing my article with Mio Tastas Viktorsson on Swedish social democracy nine years ago ( on Twitter when it was first published. It played a significant role in its popularity and significantly helped my writing career, you can read much of it on my Jacobin author page. Mio is a fan of Malcom Kyeyune’s writing and I thought your interviews with him were good - I’m listening to the one on Iran right now and he has interesting thoughts about the US military. Our base in DSA has said some unpleasant things about Angela Nagle which I felt the need to echo. I now believe her article ”The Left Case for Open Borders” should be taught to students and feel that there is a need for the Irish left, including students, to debate the question of mass migration of US-Americans to Ireland. As I have matured politically, I have come to believe that there is a risk of Ireland’s society being infiltrated by agents of imperialism. I think it would be appropriate, and in the Irish national interest (I continue to consider myself a patriot and want to see conflict among our people resolved) for László to express his opinions on this topic specifically and clearly. I am a citizen of both Ireland and the United States of America. Thank you for hearing me out, and thank you for following me on Twitter Seán!
